Jeffree and Lucy Cunningham had many friends in local First Nation communities (Esquimalt, Songhees, Tsartlip, Tsawout, and Kwakwaka'wakw)  and they were often invited to attend and document cultural gatherings, practices and events. Jeffree was present for the First Nations' cultural resurgence after the ban on indigenous expressions was lifted in 1951 and spent many years documenting this revival.
